Today starts our challenge and review on inflammation.

There are two types of inflammation.

Acute Inflammation

There is an acute inflammation when there is damage such as trauma or bacterial infection. Even chemical compounds can cause acute inflammation such as a burn. This type of inflammation lasts for a few days such as a skin infection or pneumonia.

Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is long-term and can last for several months to years.

Causes of chronic inflammation?

Chronic inflammation can occur when an acute inflammation remains in our body for an extended period of time. We see this with tuberculosis and some fungi as well as parasitic infections.

Chemical irritants can also cause chronic inflammation. Think about asbestos and the development of mesothelioma which is a lung disease.

An autoimmune disease is another example of chronic inflammation. Unfortunately, our body sees normal tissue as being a foreign invader and our body then attacks this tissue. We see this with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other autoimmune diseases.

Chemicals that we are exposed to can also cause chronic inflammation. This may be in some of the foods that we eat and from the products that we are putting on our skin as well as the air we are breathing in (pollution).

When we were exposed to chemicals, our bodies are stressed. Oxidative stress occurs which leads to the formation of free radicals as well as advanced glycation end products. Other chemicals can damage our tissue as well and I will speak more about them during this month.

Today, I challenge you to start reading the labels of the foods you are ingesting as well as the products you are putting on your body.
